magazine evalualtion

magazine evalualtion

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I have used many forms that follow the standard conventions to make the magazine look professional.
It is slightly poster style as I use little editorial content. My magazine is a little laid back and confident compared to NME, rolling stone and karrang magazine. The poster design is used to symbolise how the magazine is confident and hasn’t got a great competitor to balance with magazines on the stand.
Masthead which is one word. when i had done research I have found that most magazines have one or two words as a masthead so that it is memorable.
the colours used in the logo is black, white and blue. This is therefore my house style colours and i use these throughout.
I’ve used a button so that the magazine will stand out when on the shelves most standard magazines use this.
The font style is easy to read as it is sans serif and is bold and eye catching. The distorted shapes that are part of the masthead symbolises the sharpness and hardness as the different shapes are all filled in solid black which reflects the personalities of the target market and shows that they aim to have one goal of life and reach the top.
The strap line it is positioned at the top of the page, it stands out, it is short and sharp which will help market to the target audience.
The model is female, the target audience is very street people mostly teenagers as it is very stereotypical of the youth these days, as seen through the costume of the hat and scarf that is worn by a huge population of the youth in the UK. I have also chosen to use the glasses as a prop to convey the imagery so that the magazine can build a new trend for the youth to follow.
It has been used to hide aspects about the character, not allowing the reader to be let in and to read the model, it makes the audience what to find out what the model is hiding beneath the glasses and make the audience question why the model might be covering her identity. This will impact the audience to want to read on.
The shot is medium close up so that the audience can evaluate the positive, confident body language which will get the audience more interested. The model is black and white so that the magazine represents time. I thought that if I had done it black and white it will show time in the sense of old magazines against new times. The model is Asian so making it black and white represents how rap had Asian artists missing in the past. This also clashes against the solid colour background which makes it stand out. Also when i had done research on r’n’b images to see the image I need to make I found loads of black and white images which also gave me my idea.
The main cover line stands out from amongst the text and aligned like standard conventions.
The kickers language is colloquial to suit the target audience. The left third was the main cover line in it as this is an aspect which will sell the magazine as in newsagents this is the section that can be seen if magazines are stacked.
The issue number is required to make the contents page look like a standard one, I have the page numbers and features and interviews and i have made sections for different topics like i put news and then the page numbers for them and have persition and all the text and in some places i put text straight under an image so that it is easy to understand.
The price has been put in a place where it is easily identified by the consumer.
I made this page follow the company house style by using the same fonts and colours throughout.
My double page spread mostly conveys standard formats of double page spreads.
The model image has full eye contact and her stance is very confident, she’s not smiling which is a gesture that is shown to represent how laid back, cool, hard the model is which shows the audience that the artist doesn’t want to reveal much which also corresponds with the page title “hard core” which represents the tough lifestyle the model had. She stands alone on the page so that the reader gets full imagery of what the article sis about just by reading the image thought body stance, language, facial expressions and eye contact. The image of the model is behind a graffiti wall to convey serotypes of rap artists. The idea of have her here is because the image is there to show that she is up and coming and she has a customised brick wall with her name on it to show the world that she is going to make herself known.
The slug follows standard conventions as it is the top of the page and explains what the double page spread is about summarising with one word.
Pull quote is colloquial and addresses the audience.
The title has the buzz word hard in it which is commonly used by the youth these days to show toughness of someone.
Page number is used like standard conventions, credits and by-line is used.there is a c eye flow which follows conventions and allows for the magazine not to be confusing for the reader.
The images on the page challenges conventions as it has a specific cut which isn’t usual for magazines but this differentiates my magazine to others. This also goes with the masthead theme of sharpness.
it is a long shot representing that it is a paparazzi shot which will appeal to the target audience.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My magazine represents a young social group; especially Asians to show that they are can be well known artists too. It also interest people who like to DJ sounds. My magazine targets a range of people of both genders as the colours are very masculine and the model is a female who is also a mother which makes it target a whole new audience making the magazine challenge the conventions of standard hip hop magazines. The pose and costume is stereotypical of the youth at the present time which makes me target the audience. It appeals to mothers, Asians, struggling families, so I see my magazine at a D grade above because of the price range. As it allows for people to aspire to be like model as model was a social class d too and then moved up to A by own successes.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I fell that IPC has a gap in the distribution of Asian artists that will ensure that they will get a grater audience. As the artist is a mother it will suit woman magazines as well as hip hop there is rock too with the band linkin park so overall I have introduced a whole new magazine that has aspects that will interest a whole new audience. Over 26 million adults in the UK read IPC magazines. My magazine will confidently increase the number of readers as the target market of solidic magazine is for the youth as suppose to targeting adults as there is a wide range of readers already. The magazine doesn’t only target Asians as i have different genre of music and artists like linkin part, 50cent, F.A.B and others. So overall my magazine will suit a large population as it does justice too many ethnicities.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience of my magazine is people the age of 15-25 despite the fact that my double page spread is about a young mother it also talks about how she became an artist and goes against expectations. I believe my magazine is aimed at both males and females as the colours used are very masculine yet what is talked about relate to both males and females. The magazine format is more aesthetically pleasing for the target group I am aiming for.
How did you attract/address your audience?
The colours used are masculine and so are some of the artists which make it appeal to males and females as women find the male artist attractive and visa versa.
Competition aspect appeals to my target audience as it is what motivates and sells a magazine.
The pull quote is colloquial and is direct to the audience asking it more intimate therefore draws the reader to read on.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
In Photoshop i have learnt to use many techniques to make the images look more professional such as the clone tool, hue and saturation which allowed for my image to be black and white, the overlay where i could put my model image in the car, air brush and a lot more.
Word was used to type up questionnaire and written results.
Excel was used to make the questionnaire results in bar charts and graphs.
slide share is used to upload presentation
1001freefont for the fonts used on the masthead and headings of the pages.
Blogger used to keep media processes up to date and publish work. wrote commentaries, uploaded pictures, polls/votes,
Animoto
I have chosen this form of music as the artist himself is an ashcan who is still being established and like the artist if have introduced Asians to the industry rather than using bollywood music which doesn’t cater for the target social group.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
It’s too confused because usually the reader will look through the z axis, there’s a lot going on the page the model in the preliminary task is looking into to box direction the real one is more professional as there is no focus image the grammar of the preliminary task is wrong what is meant to have an apostrophe, in the real task I have thought about the margin making sure the magazine looks professional so when it is published nothing is cut off.

all images

I have choosen to use this image. The reason why the number plate is cloned out is because I had got primission to take a picture of the car however the condition was that i had to hide the nuber plate.

Initially I wanted to use a very expensive car and my draem car. so i have taken a picture of my toy car. i haven't used this as the image does look like a toy car espesially when it has been put on the desk.

I was trying to figure out ways in which I could make me sitting in my toy car realistic so I took a picture with someone pretending to be my model for testing puposes.

I had taken a few pictures of mansions to help with my double page spread but I was practically looking for a mainson where i can cut the image in a spicific way to fit my Double page Spread best.

This image doesn't have the cut that I am looking for (but a bautiful house)
this has been used and marged in with the image of the BMW car. i have used this as it has me looking in a certain direction and this has made the content of the double page spread more realistic.

I have used this image as it is a medium shot and shows more of the body language then other images.
I have used this image as the cover af the album that I have used in the table of contents as it is quite a powerful and striking image as it is a low angle shot looking down at the audience showing that the model is dominant and supirior which is the image i am trying to convey for thephoto of the cd cover.
used this image as the clothing represents the genre of music produced.

finished magazine

Commentary magazine cover
Like most standard magazines have chosen to use a masthead. This is called SOLIDIC. It uses the colours blue white and black to represent the colours of the house style. This has been made unique so that it is recognisable by the shapes used the minimal fonts styles and the colours. So by using a masthead I have followed standard conventions of a magazine.
I have used a dateline as most standard magazines do. It tells the date in which the publication is published. My one is “19th April 2009” which is randomly selected as this isn’t a real magazine this isn’t practically important but it is a 2009 publication so that magazine is more relevant to the 21st century lifestyle.
The main image I have used is of the model “Sonia Naza Ali” it has been used in effectively to show the image people are relating to these days and the model is making full eye contact. Also linked with the main image is the model credit, this says “The new sound Sonia Naza Ali”. This is used for as it is usual for such a credit to appear on the cover so I have conformed to the conventions of magazines.
I have used very few cover lines as I have noticed that some specific magazines that I have seen have lots of cover lines to suit the company house style whereas other magazines use very few. The main cover line is very large on the page it says “are techno remixes taking over?”it has been put on top of the image so that it shows up clearly as this has importance this would have been a recurring feature in the SOLIDIC magazine. Some coverlines are in colour to standout against the background
The left third usually in western countries is vital for selling the issue in the shops. This is the reason why I have moved the barcode from this side as it doesn’t sell my magazine where as the main cover line does. The colours used are white, blue and black which makes the company house style easily recognisable.
I have used a standard barcode so that it can be used by retailer and so that the magazine is like a standard one.
I have the selling line just under the masthead so that it easily sums up and gives a sharp, short description which will most likely gain the target audiences attention. Mine is “test your rock omiter”. These sums up what the magazine could be about. The word “Test” is a buzz word which has a further meaning that will be noticed by audience. “rock” is a common word used by the genre of music I am targeting.

commentry table of contents
I have completly changed the design from the production of my first draft. i have challenged the conventions of standerd contents throughout by using many images. however i have used many images ase i believe that is what my target audience is looking for.i have used the company house style colours to make the document look prefessional. I have used black and white images to match the cover. and a drawn landscape image that i was originally going to use in my double page spread, it took a long time to do so i thought that i might as well use it.

Double page spread commentary

my double page spread uses the colour scheme that I had for the front cover and the table of contents so that it matches the company house style and so that the magazine is professional. I have also included a graffiti background which is used so that the main image is accompanied by a relevant background. The graffiti background on one side helps distinguish the two sides of the page. The interveners questions are in the house style blue and the answers from the artist is in black. The text is small so that it follows conventions of standard magazines.
the Slug is used so that the audience knows what the content is about.
I have used a Pull quote like most standard double page spreads do. I have outlined mine without highlighting it which I have noticed from a lot of double page spreads that I had viewed. However instead, I added a box which I then filled in the solid blue background to make the quote stand out. This is the company house style colour.
I have not used any drop cap letters as I don’t think that this will suit my magazine style.
I haven’t used any side bars.
My main image takes a large amount of the page it is quite big as most of the double page spreads that have viewed has a big space used for the main image only.
I have put the Byline and credit with the blue banner used on the side of the page. It is used so that the magazine cover, table of contents and double page spread could be consistent and match the company house style. This is blue like it is on all three magazine documents produced. It is written in the font seven monkey fury BB to match the masthead font style.
The attached pictures are used so that the audience can know what the content is about by looking at the images.
The spread title is used so that the audience can read it and get a feeling to the sort of article the double page spread uses. The word “Hard” is a buzz word and will gain the audience’s attention.

masthead research

Firstly i had decided that I wanted to do my logo free hand and so I made a page full of differents styles i could use. all this different fonts choosen has come from http://www.1001freefonts.com/ and are drawn out to see what style will best suit the purpose of my magazine.

I had made my magazine logo by free hand and like usual Ispend extra time in making everything to prefection. i latter on discovered that i could have used specific tools like the magic want tool and then strok outlune to help me achieve a sharper and clearer edge.

Table of Contents

draft 2

I like the format of my page however a few more adjustmaents need to be made so that it suits the style of SOLIDIC magazine and so that there is a linkage between the cover and the double page spread.
The format of my table of contents changed dramatically. My 1st draft was too creative to be like a standerd format table of contentsso i changed it. i used the standerd house style colours so that the document can look consistent throughout the magazines. i took pictures of the artst Sonia Naza Ali and left some of the both the images that was used in the 1st draft so that the document is consistent with the magazine front cover.
i have added images of an urban landscape so that it fits in with the genre aimed at.

final

l have added features like the issue number so that it looks more like a standerd table of contents.i also added a border to match the magazine logo.

Double Page Spread

final draft 2

final

there isn't a huge change to get from my first draft to my final piece. firstly i changed the format of my my text so that it was clearer to read and then I also changed the font size so that it appeals to my target audience, having it the size i did was quite intimidating to the age range i am targeting at. from the page number section i removed "page" from the number so that I could make the number bigger also I had moved the page number that was over the main image to highlight the importance of the image.

I printed out the 2nd draft document so that i could see what it would look like if the 2nd draft was my final product then i found lots of errors that would make my document look un-prefessional so I made changes to it to make it look my like a real magazine. and i am happy with my end product.

presentation.

Slide 1: this video is pretty much self explanatory. Matt Heafy talks about how his group has always been doing solos since 1999 and he says “I guess it takes this long to be discovered” there favourite bans are interested in it and that’s why they also do this form of music. On this clip we find an extract of the sort of music they produce. They went on tour with Metallica and they are good friends with them there hero is Metallica and matt says “that’s the best thing anyone can ever ask for, having your hero approve and like of what you’re doing”. This tells us that even though they are not well known, they are favoured by the band that they aspire t be like.

Slide 2: a natural way of reading the page is a c-flow when following conventions of a standard double page spread. A z-flow usually is used on single pages like the cover of a magazine. The eye travels from the top left hand corner of the page to the middle of the left hand page back to the right at the bottom of the page. Our eyes natural cover both the pages using this theory.
Observing the double page spread I have found that the slug is in the top left hand corer on the left sided page. This conforms to standard conventions of real magazines and is used to tell the reader what the content of the page is about.

Slide 3: the pull quote from this page says “some people have the smallest bit of fame and turn into total dicks” from this quote we can gather that the language is very colloquial we also find that perhaps they themselves know that they don’t want to be famous as they know the outcome and resolution if they did become famous. Not only can we tell from the pull quote that the language is colloquial but we can also see this through most of the content on the double page spread and throughout the magazine. It says “wanna be a rockstar? Trivium reveals the science bit” and just by this small printed words that can hardly be noticed is a column just by it given a title “avoid shit talking”. This is humorous language as it indirectly comments that “science is shit”.
Slide 4: evaluating the title “karrang” and the title “the rules of rock” of the double page spread I find that the same style is consistent throughout. When looking at “karrang” it looks like there are light rays in the word which could suggest raving and night clubs and the deformity of the words also suggests that there isn’t stability in the people who may buy the magazine.
Looking at the deformity of the word “rock” we can see that it looks like the texture of something solid like a rock that is disintegrating. This is like the title of the magazine which makes it consistent.

Slide 5: from the magazine cover and the double page spread you can see that there are a few linkages to help make the magazine look consistent throughout. The main cover line is written across the page and similarly the title of the double page spread is also diagonal. Another linkage is the positioning of the people in the image there are four people on the cover and four people on the double page spread. Most of the text on the cover and double page spread is on the right and side. And finally the colour of the text is usually white.
Slide 6: buzz words like rules and secrets word appeal to the core buyer as it attracts and entices the reader to read on further. The word rules give the reader the impression that these are guidelines or a religious book which makes it seem like rock has its own individual religion. And the word secrets tempt the reader to believe that the content reveals something that couldn’t be revealed anywhere else.
